Preset loaded: JPEG, 550 KB — inside the 5–600 KB photo range. GATE allows far more room than most exams.
Portal limits change — double-check the current notification before you submit.
Quality is lowered only as far as the floor allows. If that still isn't enough, the image is scaled down in small steps instead — downscaling looks far better than heavy compression artifacts. EXIF metadata (location, camera, serial numbers) is always removed for your privacy; colour accuracy is kept.
GATE specifies ranges rather than single values, which is unusually forgiving. For the 2026 cycle the photograph had to fall between 200 × 260 and 530 × 690 pixels with an aspect ratio between 0.66 and 0.89, sized 5–600 KB; the signature between 250 × 80 and 580 × 180 pixels with a width-to-height ratio between 2.75 and 3.75, sized 3–300 KB. Both in JPEG. Because GATE rotates between host institutes each year and each publishes its own instructions page, confirm these against the notification for the cycle you are applying to rather than assuming they carry over.
The result always lands just under it.

Almost always size or format. Set the portal's exact limit as your target, pick JPEG, re-upload.
